چکیده

Abstract. Eddy current testing using a pickup coil is usually applied to the surface detection of cracks because of its high frequency. However, for metal infrastructure, detection of not only the surface but also internal cracks is desired. Therefore, we have developed a low-frequency eddy current testing system to inspect interior structures using a magneto-resistive (MR) sensor with a wide measuring frequency range, ranging from DC to high frequencies. For imaging of the crack shape, especially the front edge of the crack, a tangential component detection and analysis method that can directly detect the eddy current distribution was developed. This distribution reflects the shape of the crack because the current distribution is changed by the existence of the crack and the current is concentrated at the front edge of the crack. Eddy current testing is difficult to apply to steel constructions because of magnetic noise because of changes in permeability and magnetization of ferromagnetism. In order to investigate the influence of magnetism, we compared two different types of materials: aluminum plates as a non-magnetic material and steel plates as a magnetic material. We found that, regardless of the material, internal cracks were imaged by the highly sensitive MR sensor at a low frequency and with tangential magnetic field measurements.

Spatial detection of ferromagnetic wires using GMR sensor and based on shape induced anisotropy

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new technique for row spacing measurement in a wire array using giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor. The self-rectifying property of the GMR-based probes leads to accurately detection of the magnetic field fluctuations caused by surface-breaking cracks in conductive materials, shape-induced magnetic anisotropy, etc. The ability to manufacture probes h...

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a promising modality for noninvasive imaging due to its contactless technology. Being a non-contact safe imaging technique, MIT has been an appropriate method in compare to other electrical tomography. In this imaging method, a primary magnetic field is applied by excitation coils to induce eddy currents in the material to be studied and a secondary magnet...

3D Magnetic Field Responses to a Defect Using a Tangential Driver-coil for Pulsed Eddy Current Testing

In Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) testing, the response feature of one-dimensional magnetic field component, perpendicular to the conductor’s surface, is used to detect and quantify the defects. It is not sufficient for signal interpretation and noise suppression. A novel PEC probe, which consists of a tangential driver-coil and three orthorhombic pickup coils, is introduced in this paper. It is gre...

Advance in Magnetoresistance Magnetometer Performances Applied in Eddy Current Sensor Arrays

The sensitivity of the magnetic sensor is important for many electromagnetic Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) applications. Nevertheless, for successful defect detection, properties such as high linearity, large dynamic range and good spatial resolution are required. One solution comes in good using improved solidstate magnetic sensors based on Giant MagnetoResistance (GMR). In this way, we hav...

Design of Nondestructive System for Hardness of Carbonitrided Steel Parts ‎Using Eddy Current Testing Method: Case study on the Tappet Parts

In this paper, a non-destructive eddy current test system was designed to evaluate the surface hardness of the carbonitrided steel parts. For this purpose, various samples of the tappet were used after the surface hardening and grinding operations as control samples and, if necessary, were subjected to destructive and non-destructive tests. Microstructural studies were performed with a microsco...
